Pluto in Aquarius and the new Economic Paradigm

What will replace the economic paradigm of the last 200 years?

Back in 2020, on 21st December to be exact, Jupiter and Saturn made a conjunction. Not madly significant as they do this every 20 years. The conjunction marks the beginning of a new economic cycle.

But Jupiter and Saturn have another longer, more significant cycle. For a period of around 180-200 years their conjunctions take place in signs of a particular element: fire, earth, air or water. December 2020 marked the end of a long sequence of conjunctions in earth signs that began in January 1842.

The earth signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, are essentially practical and materialistic. In agricultural terms, Taurus tends the earth and grows the crops, Virgo takes them to market and negotiates the best price and Capricorn arranges the social and financial structures to store the grain and provide the investment to finance next year’s crop.

Earth can be moved about, transported, traded, written in ledgers and so on but it is the nature of earth to accumulate. This accumulation of capital has been our model of economics for the last 180 years and its faults are becoming more and more apparent.

In December 2020, a “Great Air Mutation” took place – the beginning of a sequence of conjunctions between Jupiter and Saturn in the element air.

The Air signs: Libra, Gemini and Aquarius are about communication, relationship and community. Air does not accumulate like earth does. It is the nature of air to flow and move. In general terms, Libra is about the achieving of balance, Gemini is about the flow and sharing of ideas and Aquarius is about circulation and democracy. The characters of these signs suggest the nature of the new economic paradigm.

But first the old has to be cleared away and that’s Pluto’s job. Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto – the planet that brings the crap to the surface where it can be seen and cleared, working very much like a homeopathic remedy.

In personal astrology, Pluto – the lord of the underworld – takes you to the deepest places in yourself in order to find regeneration and renewal. While Capricorn is about our place in society, our career and ambitions and our desire for prestige.

In medical astrology, Capricorn rules the bones and the skeleton, the fundamental structure of the body.

In mundane astrology, Capricorn is associated with the banking industry, with government and with bureaucracy in general. Pluto went into Capricorn in 2008 with the shock of the Global Financial Crisis, and the subsequent release of the first crypto-currency, Bitcoin. Then in 2020, it made a conjunction with Saturn (the first to take place in Capricorn for 500 years) at the beginning of the Corona virus pandemic with its devastating economic consequences.

And it is Aquarius that begins this new cycle of business activity. Back in 2020, the Great Mutation took place in the first degree of Aquarius (0 degrees, 29 minutes to be exact) and this will be activated when Pluto moves over this degree between March 2023 and November 2024 as the transition from an earth-bound, corporate Capricornian economics to a more relationship-based, community-oriented, small-scale system under the influence of Aquarius.

More on the historical background of Great Mutations here.

The Aquarian Paradigm

An Aquarian model of economics can be described in a similar manner to the way Acupuncture works. For a body to be healthy, there has to be a flow of the energy known in Chinese as Chi (also spelled Qi and known in Japanese as Ki). If Chi is blocked, or if it accumulates too much in one place leading to a lack in another then the body is sick. For me, this describes the current economic situation with the accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few in a few rich countries. For there to be physical health, there must be a flow of Chi. For there to be economic health, there needs to be a flow of money and resources to all parts of society and all countries in the world.

And this is Aquarius’ job. The Aquarian economic paradigm is not based on the accumulation of assets but rather circulation to all parts of society and the world. Add in the contribution of Libra and you’re looking at a fair system that balances everyone’s interests, management and workers; producers, distributors and consumers. Add the contribution of Gemini, the twins who once shared a womb, and you’re talking about a system that is based on sharing.

So, first we’ve got the transition of Pluto from Capricorn into Aquarius which will take till November 2024. Then we’ve got the transit of Pluto through Aquarius until 2044. Let’s see how it goes.
