Mariah’s musical talent comes from a conjunction of Neptune and the moon – the moon in the last degree of Scorpio and Neptune in the first degree of Sagittarius. In her autobiography ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey’, she describes the way this dissolves boundaries, allowing a transpersonal connection thus, “… jamming with jazz musicians was close to a spiritual experience. There’s a creative energy that flows through the room… When you are in a zone, it is a miraculous madness.”
American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress.
Birth Data: 27 March 1970, 07:27. Huntington, NY
Pholus 29 Aquarius 33
exactly square Moon 29 Scorpio 04 and Neptune 00 Sagittarius 43.
Chiron 6 Aries 18
exactly conjunct the Sun 6 Aries 25
exactly opposite Uranus 6 Libra 46.
And then there’s Pholus in the last degree of Aquarius in an exact (to the degree) square with her moon. Pholus-moon contacts can enable someone to plug in to the collective mind, giving her powerful insight into what people want to hear, enabling her to tune in to the trends.
Describing a band she was singing with in the early days she says, “Didn’t these people even listen to the radio? Didn’t they know what was popular?” Pholus is also about legacy, the magical sacred legacy that was contained in the flask of wine that Hercules opened in Pholus’ cave. This legacy Mariah got from her opera singer Mother, Patricia.
But square aspects are stressful and challenging. And when they affect the moon in the birth chart, there can be a lack of protection. Her mother may have passed on the divine gift of song but in terms of material circumstances her early life was insecure both emotionally and financially and left her with a conscious or unconscious search for divine protection.
However, when this protection came in the shape of the head of CBS records, Tommy Mottola, the price was his obsessive control of her. Mottola has Venus exactly (to one minute of arc) conjunct Pluto in Leo. Pluto is the power broker and in conjunction with Venus, creates a relentless, all-consuming passion for the beloved. Not only that, it casts all relationships in terms of power and control. This conjunction makes a challenging square to Mariah’s Mars on the ascendant, the unstoppable dynamism and heroism of her being.
With his north node in Aries conjunct her Venus and her north node in Pisces conjunct his moon, their relationship was nothing if not karmic. At the very simplest level, he is her protector and she is his protégé. There is a karmic echo from another life. A powerful connection indeed.
The story of how Mariah broke the spell of Mottola’s obsessive control over her is told in her autobiography. When she realised that his need to control came from weakness (his unaspected Mars in Gemini) she could reconnect with her own sense of heroism with her Mars right on the ascendant, directly available.
‘And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you’ll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you.’
