Moonletter April 2019

By Ben Belinsky

Welcome to the moonletter for the forthcoming mooncycle beginning on April 5th 2019 with the new moon in Aries and spanning the full moon in Libra on 19th April 2019.

New Moon in Aries – 5 April

While the sun and moon are starting a new cycle in Aries, Mercury is still in Pisces. While conscious focus (the sun) and the gravitational and emotional pull of the moon are moving us forward in the dynamic sign of Aries, communication is still trying to make sense of it all.

Mercury’s retrograde period in Pisces is probably the most fuddling of all Mercury retrograde periods. None of the usual rules and expectations apply. Things appear to be running quite smoothly until you realise they’re completely on the wrong track and it’s time to unravel and start knitting that row again.

At the new moon, although Mercury will have been heading direct for a week and things will have started to clear, there’s still a way to go. You’ll find that your intuition (if you’ve been listening to it) has been your best guide through this – if, instead of trying to read the map, you’ve been following where your feet want to go. Pisces rules the feet by the way.

Full Moon in Libra – 19 April

Just a minute, the last full moon was in Libra as well. What’s going on?

Well, the last full moon was right at the beginning of Libra. This one is right at the end, in the last degree of Libra, right on the cusp of Scorpio.

The sun at the end of Aries is nudging up against Uranus at the beginning of Taurus. It feels like a preparation for movement. A time to be aware of the harbingers and portents of what is coming over the horizon. A time to learn to read how the future is implied in the present. It’s like a well-written detective novel when the author is dropping subtle hints about whodunnit.

With Mercury (communication) close up to the centaur Chiron in Aries, it’s also a time to heal any of the miscommunications that took place while Mercury was dragging us through a confusing retrograde in Pisces, the most subtle and indefinable of signs. Aries needs straight talking, but a little diplomacy would help as well.

Go well

Ben

How to look after your Aries

There’s an Aries coming and they’re moving fast. All you can do is get out of the way and hang around in case they crash and need a bit of patching up.

Did I say impulsive? Did I say impatient? You’re wasting your time if you try and hold them back. You can remind them of their obligations. They might listen. It might slow them down for a moment, but they have to learn in their own way. Just make sure they have comprehensive insurance cover and know a good divorce lawyer.

Having said that, you’re lucky to have an Aries in your life. Their confidence and get-up-and-go attitude are pure inspiration. Procrastination is not one of their sins. They decide. They act.

The Big Picture

You might have noticed that there’s some pretty big stuff going on at the moment. It’s a lot bigger than the monthly moon cycle, or the yearly solar cycle. So, we need to look at the cycles of the slow-moving outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. They deal with the big historical movements, the sea-changes, the shifts in power and perception. They’re the ones ‘behind’ the political and cultural changes happening in many places in the world.

The approaching conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn is the most obvious at the moment. Capricorn’s sphere of influence is government and big business. The issues are power (Pluto) and control (Saturn). There are various scenarios being played out between these two forces. On the one hand there’s mistrust of government and big business and the urge to ‘take back control’. Then there’s the bringing to light of corruption in organisations, for power to become more responsible. There’s also there’s fear of change which leads to the urge to build walls, physical, legal or whatever. At root we’re looking at an opportunity for a fundamental change in government and business.

Saturn and Pluto make their exact conjunction in January 2020. This conjunction happens every 35 or so years, but it is the first time (since Pluto’s discovery in 1930) that it has happened in the sign of Capricorn. In fact, it’s the first time since 1518 during the Renaissance.

The Renaissance wasn’t just a time of great artistic achievements, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and others. It was also the time of Niccolò Machiavelli, regarded as the first political philosopher. Plus, it was the birth of business practices that are still in use today: double-entry bookkeeping, letters of credit, and holding companies. In England it was the time of Henry VIII and the shift from Catholicism to Protestantism – a political as much as a religious shift.

But none of the planets beyond Saturn had been discovered in those days. It was a different world with different stars. With the technological facilities available today, there are so many possibilities for a new financial paradigm.

Another factor impacting the world of finance and business is that Uranus has moved into the sign of Taurus. This means that there are now three of the big planets in earth signs having a profound impact on material reality. At the social level, Uranus is associated with scientific experimentation and political revolutions. Taurus is Venus’ realm, associated with wealth and our system of values. This is the area that is up for change.

Then in December 2020 another massive shift takes place. Since 1842, Jupiter and Saturn – whose movements are associated with business cycles, have made their conjunctions in the earth signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. On 21st December 2020, they will be conjunct in the sign of Aquarius, in fact in the first degree of Aquarius, starting a new series of conjunctions in air signs. This is known as ‘the great air mutation’. Aquarius is associated with technological advance and democracy, so I’ll be keeping my eye on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.

But while Capricorn is bearing the main brunt of the transformations, its opposite sign of Cancer is also being impacted. At the social level, Cancer is concerned with home, family and tribe. It’s a water sign associated with nurturing and protection. It’s an emotional sign to do with the tribal feelings that holds us together, but which can also turn against the ‘other’.

It comes down to the word ‘we’. What do we mean when we say ‘we’? My family? My race? My nation? My religion? Who are ‘we’? Is it an exclusive ‘we’ that separates us from ‘them’, or is it an inclusive ‘we’? Open the Cancerian sense of ‘we’ to its greatest and it is associated with our planetary home, our environment, our survival as a species in the earth’s ecosystem.
