Moonletter April 2023
By Ben Belinsky
Welcome to the Moonletter for the forthcoming mooncycle beginning on 21 March 2023 with the new moon in Aries and spanning the full moon in Libra on 6 April 2023.
New Moon in Aries – 21 March
Aries is a dynamic sign and with five planets (including the sun and moon) in Aries, this is a high energy new moon. Plus, it’s right on the Spring Equinox. Plus, all the planets are going direct at the moment – until 21 April. This is a window of opportunity to get new things started.
So, first there’s the equinox on 20 March when the sun goes into Aries. Then the moon follows less than 24 hours later, joining Mercury, Jupiter and Chiron. Aries is the ram that butts through obstacles. (To butt, verb, meaning to strike or push with the head or horns.) In psychology, it’s the birth of the ego, the sense of identity that distinguishes us from the collective and makes us an individual.
Basically, Aries is pure energy, its character is fearless, daring, impulsive. But it has to learn patience and timing and the art of delayed gratification. And while it never really loses its childlike innocence and impulsiveness, it’s a sign that mellows with age.
Aries is ruled by Mars and in the new moon chart Mars is in Gemini in a tense angle to the sun and moon suggesting that Aries’ impulsiveness can get it into conflicts: ‘It don’t take shit from no one!’ This attitude is further exacerbated by a tricky angle from Neptune which can make things a little nervous and sensitive; plus there’s an awkward angle to Mars from Pluto, awkward in the sense of it can crop up unexpectedly and at the wrong moment if it feels its authority is being challenged.
How to handle this waywardness? Well, there’s a restraining angle from Saturn which has just moved into Pisces. This could mellow the reactiveness of Mars with a sense of compassion and an awareness of long-term consequences, perhaps diverting Mars’ attention away from joining the fray.
Full Moon in Libra – 6 April
Two weeks later, at the full moon, the moon has swung round to Libra, opposing the planets in Aries. (Opposing here means polarising rather than conflicting.) The sun fully illuminates the moon and the solar consciousness fully illuminates the complexity of human relationships, particularly man-woman relationships. The sun in Aries is conjunct Chiron, the wounded healer. Aries, as we said above, is about the sense of self and the wound is to the identity, the sense of ‘I am’. But Chiron’s agenda is: where we are wounded is where we can heal others, in this case to help them know who they are.
The light from the wounded sun in Aries fully illuminates the moon in Libra whose light reflects back to the earth, healing and soothing. And it is this light, the light of the moon, the deep consciousness of the female that connects and includes and heals the male, not by doing anything, just by being and reflecting. In this way the male can grow (Jupiter, the planet of growth, is close to the sun as well) and find his true inner heroism that is nothing to do with the cheap second-hand world of celebrity culture.
Also by the time of the full moon, Saturn and Pluto have moved into their new signs. Saturn on its way through Pisces makes easy angles with Mercury in Taurus and Mars in Cancer. This suggests that there are new things to be said, new understandings of what motivates, and because Mars is in Cancer, of the motivation to care for and defend. See Mars the Motivator for more details.
While Pluto, having just moved into Aquarius and squaring Mercury and Venus in Taurus challenges our materialist values and starts a new chapter of the revolution in the worlds of finance and science.
Go well and stay well
