Moonletter December 2023 – January 2024

By Ben Belinsky

Welcome to the Moonletter for the forthcoming mooncycle beginning on 12 December 2023 with the new moon in Sagittarius and spanning the full moon in Cancer on 27 December 2023.

New Moon in Sagittarius – 12 December

Sagittarius is the sign of the archer and archers like targets as well as goals and projects. They are renowned for their positive mental attitude also for opening their mouths and putting their foot in it. But it’s never meant maliciously, they just happen to find that ouch-spot and land an arrow there. Then (if they notice they’ve upset you) they’ll apologise profusely and turn things around with a joke and a generous compliment. That’s when they’re not trekking the big outdoors or trying to get into the Guinness book of records for some crazy stunt.

The new moon in Sagittarius on December 12th is full of plans for the future. Hopefully (for Sagittarius is the sign of hope) these plans will be grounded in reality and have a practical basis but I would advise Sagittarius that with Uranus the disruptor in an awkward (inconjunct) angle to the new moon that a plan B is definitely required. Plus they would be advised to keep enough space on the credit card for emergencies such as bribing foreign police or customs officials. Sagittarius will breeze through it all of course and have a jolly tale to tell of their adventures.

That’s the plot line. Now for the question… Will Sagittarian optimism overcome Uranian disruption? Will it manage to escape scot-free without a stain on its character? In its favour, there’s a Jupiter-Venus opposition at the time of the new moon. And although this is an opposition, the planetary energies are both positive with optimistic Jupiter energy boosting the sensuous and comfort loving qualities of Venus in Scorpio. This looks like social fun. The dating apps should be buzzing, but I wouldn’t expect anything to last. Carpe diem!

Then to add to the awkwardness, Mercury goes retrograde the day after the new moon. Mercury retrogrades tend to complicate communications in the sense that the message that is sent is not always the message that is received. Maybe there are delays which affect transport arrangements. Maybe we make assumptions about the other person’s situation. All sorts of maybes. So, it’s best always to have a plan B. During this retrograde period Mercury trucks backwards from Capricorn into Sagittarius, so it could cause complications in dealing with companies and bureaucracies (sort of expected over the holiday period) and in Sagittarius when focussing too much on the big picture can lead to lack of attention to detail. This should ease up when Mercury goes direct on January 1st, and when Mercury leaves the retrograde shadow zone on January 20th.

Full Moon in Cancer – 27 December

For those of you looking for some mental clarity, do let me know if you find any. The lack of planets in air signs suggests that clear logical thinking is at a premium. And if you do manage to get hold of some, there’s the possibility that it may not be connected to reality – just sort of floating around in some abstract philosophical space somewhere.

The full moon over the Christmas holiday is in Cancer – the sign of the family and how appropriate for the time of family get-togethers. But as we know, family time isn’t always peaceful. There’s a conjunction of Mars (confrontation) and Mercury (communication) which could lead to arguments. But as they are in Sagittarius, good ole Sagi is able to turn everything into a game.

On the plus side, the Cancer moon and the Capricorn sun sit nicely with Jupiter in Taurus (comfort and joy), and Saturn in Pisces (goodwill to all men). And with Venus in Scorpio in a friendly aspect to Neptune in Pisces we’re looking at a nice sense of what the Danes call hygge which my online dictionary defines as ‘a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being’.

Then on New Years Eve, Jupiter goes direct. This planet’s influence is generally beneficent (except when he goes over the top with his generosity and largesse) and a forward moving Jupiter in financial sign Taurus looks like good economic news.

Next moonletter: More on what to expect for the year ahead.

Wishing you well over the Christmas holiday

Ben
