Moonletter January 2020

By Ben Belinsky

Welcome to the Moonletter for the forthcoming mooncycle beginning on December 26th 2019 with the new moon in Capricorn, and spanning the full moon in Cancer on January 10th, 2020.

New Moon in Capricorn – 26 December – Solar Eclipse

There’s a new moon on Boxing Day which is also a solar eclipse. The moon doesn’t completely block out the sun, it leaves a ring, hence it’s called an annular eclipse. It won’t be visible in Europe or North America. But if you are in the United Arab Emirates or Oman, the south of India or Sri Lanka, or if you’re floating around in the Bay of Bengal or somewhere in the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Borneo, or the southern islands of the Philippines you see it before it heads off into the Pacific Ocean to the island of Guam. There’s more detail here.

So, the Christmas holiday is at the dark of the moon. Usually the time before a new moon is a period of quiet reflection. It’s like everything has stopped before it starts again. On the one hand it doesn’t feel like a time of exuberant celebration, more like a time of withdrawal from the world, following the moon’s north node to the family sign of Cancer. With Jupiter up close to the sun and moon it feels more like a quiet time of recharging.

You can read more about eclipses here.

During this period there are things that won’t happen unless you make time for them. Time for loving, time for dreaming and connecting with those far away. Time for telling stories, for clearing old memories, for saying things that need to be said.

In addition to the sun and moon up close to Jupiter (see last month’s moonletter for notes on Jupiter in Capricorn), Saturn and Pluto are edging closer, moving towards their conjunction.

Full Moon in Cancer – 10 January – Lunar Eclipse

The Sun, Mercury, Saturn and Pluto are conjunct at the time of the first full moon of 2020. Please read my piece about the Saturn-Pluto conjunction here: https://moonletter.co.uk/saturn-conjunct-pluto/ where I’ve written about the anticipated effects in the world.
At a more personal level it asks for a response from each of us to the shifts in the world. What does security mean to you? What is success for you? Whose life are you living if not your own? What can you do to make a difference in this world? Where do your responsibilities lie? Where do they end?

Meanwhile…. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Ben
