Moonletter June 2020

By Ben Belinsky

Welcome to the Moonletter for the forthcoming mooncycle beginning on May 22nd 2020 with the new moon in Gemini, and spanning the full moon in Sagittarius on June 5th, 2020.

New Moon in Gemini – 22 May

The days before the new moon are not a time to start anything new. It’s more a time to finish off old business, to withdraw from the world a bit. For some people this can feel depressing. But as someone who has had to deal with depression on and off all my life, my understanding is that what is depressed is my attention to the outer world as I need to turn my focus inwards. I know this is not true for everyone but for me it was a way to make sense of and cope with these feelings and to learn to accept them knowing that they will pass.

The new moon in Gemini is on Friday 22nd. Do not expect the new energy to kick in as if a switch is thrown. It may take a few days before you become aware of any change. Plus, we’ve got three of the slow-moving outer planets – Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto – running retrograde. So, their energy is taking us into a period of reflection rather than action.

From a business point of view, this is a time for research and planning, making sense of the new conditions. I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone that the world is going through massive changes and to try and move forward in a time of great uncertainty without understanding is probably futile.

There are a couple of other astrological factors to mention as well. Mars (the planet of action and decision) is in a tough angle to the sun and moon. This adds to the feeling that it’s not a time for ‘doing’. Sure, if there are things that have to be attended to, then patiently working through any resistance will bring rewards. An easy angle from Saturn will help with the necessary sustained and persistent effort.

Gemini energy is light-hearted and ‘gay’ in the traditional sense of the word. It can help us to get through difficult times, distracting and entertaining us with interesting conversations. It keeps our focus on what is to hand and is not concerned with the long-term or the big picture, helping us live one day at a time.

As well as the new moon in Gemini, there’s also a delightful conjunction of Venus and Mercury. However, this is being hit by a square from Neptune in Pisces. On the one hand, inspiration is there, creative energies are flowing. On the other hand, there’s the risk of being taken in by charm and sweet words.

Full Moon in Sagittarius – 5 June

Venus has been an evening star since last August. On June 3rd it is between the earth and the sun, appearing to move retrograde and forming an inferior conjunction with the sun. Two days later, at the full moon on June 5th, Venus is still too close to the sun to be seen. We have to wait till the middle of June for it to appear again as a morning star, rising a few hours before the Sun then fading away in the brightening sky.

The rebirth of Venus as a morning star marks the beginning of a new cycle. It represents the moment when the Venusian faculties of emotion and evaluation take on what master astrologer Dane Rudhyar calls a “new quality of will and purpose.” Venus in Gemini is playful and charming but is uncomfortable with the intensity of emotional expression.

This birth is also attended by the full moon in Sagittarius and by Mars and Neptune in Pisces. The gifts they bring to the reborn Venus are as follows: The Sagittarian moon gives a sense of purpose and guidance as well as encouragement for the journey. Mars and Neptune challenge the carefree and often careless Geminian Venus to trust intuition and insight and even to accept the need for sacrifice. We shall see how this child develops its potential through the 584-day Venus cycle.

The full moon is also a time to say what needs to be said. These things may cause hurt so if they are said with bitterness and the intent to wound, they will only create protracted conflict. But if they are said with love and with the intent to heal, then they will be heard and taken on board.

Go well and stay well

Ben
