Moonletter March 2022

By Ben Belinsky

Welcome to the Moonletter for the forthcoming mooncycle beginning on 2 March 2022 with the new moon in Pisces, and spanning the full moon in Virgo on 18 March 2022.

New Moon in Pisces – 2 March

Pisces is the sign of the fish, two fishes in fact, which means things with Pisces can go one of two ways. With one fish, the spiritual perspective and higher understanding of Pisces comes into play, This is especially the case since Jupiter conjunct the new moon is amplifying the compassion channel, increasing sensitivity and empathy. That’s fine if you’re in a caring, supportive situation but sensitivity to the pain and trauma of the word is another story.

The other fish swims towards illusion and fantasy. Remember that Pisces is also ruled by Neptune, the manipulator of images, the dreamer of dreams, and when Jupiter amplifies that channel, fact and fantasy can get confused. Added to that, the centaur, Nessus is also conjunct Jupiter. Nessus was a conman, and his game plan was deceit and revenge. On the other hand, if you get Nessus on your side, he can play the scambuster, waking us up to the tricks that others are playing on us.

At times like this, I turn to Saturn for a reality check. While the compassion and the spiritual perspective are vital to keep us connected, and while the illusions may be comfortable, we need to stay real. Fortunately, Saturn is in no-nonsense Aquarius, conjunct Mercury – the planet of communication. Saturn will help keep a perspective on things, keeping the focus on what is essential in terms of maintaining healthy relationships with others particularly in group situations. The only caveat is to watch out for groupthink.

In addition, at the new moon, there’s a tight triple conjunction of Venus, Mars and Pluto in Capricorn. Mars and Venus together, as I mentioned last time are the ingredients where Venus is the attraction and Mars is he action. Mars is physical, the animal connection, while Venus is to do with beauty. It is of course possible to find someone beautiful without finding them shaggable, and vice versa. But when both these circuits are working together, you’re definitely in business. One astrologer describes Venus plus Mars as ‘pleasurable friction’. Adding Pluto to the mix: Pluto and Mars are natural allies and their conjunction is to do with indomitable will. While Venus and Pluto together can get kind of obsessive about the object of love or lust.

As well as the arena of relationships, this combination of energies can really tap into a deep well of creativity. This is given by the Sabian symbol for the degree of this conjunction: “a mountain pilgrimage”; in other words a spiritual journey to the heights. (Sabian symbols are clairvoyant images for each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac.)

Soundtrack for your desires, The Pas de Deux from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Alternatively, there’s always Tina Turner, ‘River Deep, Mountain High’.

Full Moon in Virgo – 18th March

This sensitivity continues at the full moon with a spread of four planets in Pisces – Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Neptune. But compared to the new moon, the full moon is in Virgo which as an earth sign is more grounded. So in order not to get washed away by all the Pisces energy, moon in Virgo reminds us to look after the practical details of life such as making sure you eat properly and keep your place clean and clear.

In addition the moon is in an easy trine with Pluto in Capricorn, so for any dealings you have with bureaucracies or government departments around this time, the best way is to visualise success in the same way that an athlete visualises crossing the finish line.

Plus Mars and Venus are still close in with each other but now they’re in Aquarius so the rules of engagement have changed. Let’s say that Aquarius is more experimental and is less concerned with traditional roles.

Loads of festivals at this time as well: Hindus throwing coloured powder around at Holi, Persians and Zoroastrians feasting at their new year, Jews wearing fancy dress and getting drunk at Purim, and Irish recovering from the excesses of St Patrick’s Day.
