Moonletter May 2024

By Ben Belinsky

Welcome to the Moonletter for the forthcoming mooncycle beginning on 8 May 2024 with the new moon in Taurus and spanning the full moon in Sagittarius on 23 May 2024.

New Moon in Taurus – 8 May

You can’t have a total eclipse of the sun at every new moon – it doesn’t work like that. You see the moon orbits at an angle to the plane of the ecliptic. It’s only when the moon is crossing that plane that all three bodies, the sun, moon and earth line up and it’s an eclipse. And that happens approximately every 6 months. There’s a fuller explanation here.

So, at the new moon on May 8th with the sun and moon plus three planets in Taurus, three planets in Aries and two in Pisces, the only planet in an air sign is Pluto in Aquarius. Air is about clear thinking and intelligent reasoning and there seems to be precious little of that around at the moment. The world seems to be stuck in old ways of thinking, running on instinct, emotion and impulse. This puts pressure on the air signs, Libra, Aquarius and Gemini who are fed up with all the stale ideas and are looking for clarity. We’ll have to wait till the sun and Jupiter move into Gemini later in the month.

Meanwhile with the new moon in earth-loving Taurus, along with Venus, Jupiter and Uranus, the focus is on appreciating the value of the natural world. Venus is in its own sign reminding us how precious our planet is. Jupiter in Taurus is concerned with financial security while Uranus is on the lookout for something new.

Mercury is leading the train in Aries, expressing the impulsive and dare I say combative energy of Mars. This is obvious in the world at the moment but we should be aware of this tendency in our personal lives. Especially with Chiron conjunct Mercury. This could spark arguments which on the one hand may clear the air, but on the other hand may touch ‘ouch’ points to which we may respond without thinking.

Then there’s Saturn and Neptune in Pisces. Neptune is in the very last degree of its own sign and will hang out there for a while before going retrograde at the beginning of July. It won’t make the crossing into Aries for another year now. When a planet is in the last degree of a sign it’s carrying the legacy of the time it has been in that sign. Neptune in Pisces is carrying the unspent compassion of the last twelve years with Saturn giving it the fortitude to bear it a little while longer.

But with Pluto in Aquarius leading the pack at the new moon, we are reminded that we are not totally powerless in this situation. By balancing the energy as best we can in the way we live our lives and the way we treat each other, with kindness, respect and a sense of human decency, despite the urges to judge and retaliate, our thoughts, words and actions will ripple outward and influence those around us.

Full Moon in Sagittarius – 23 May

The sun moves into Gemini on 20th May. Then on the 23rd there’s a full moon and then a few hours later, Venus moves into Gemini followed by Jupiter on 25th. We’re leaving the stubborn persistence and need for certainty of Taurus and with a blast of fresh air the windows are thrown open. This is a chance for release from old thinking habits. These habits have become unconscious and automatic. There’s more to come in a couple of years when Uranus transits into Gemini which presages a veritable hurricane of invention.

At the full moon, the sun and moon are backed up by an easy angle from Pluto in Aquarius. Power gets unstuck and becomes more negotiable. This is a temporary window to make tactical moves while strategic gains will come later.

It’s also potentially a very creative time with the sun close up to a magical conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. This conjunction is considered to be a blessing, and at the very end of Taurus, about to enter Gemini we’re looking at a time when it’s possible to change the game. See more about the cusp of Taurus and Gemini here. Added to this, Neptune provides the gift of imagination to enable you envision what you want in your life and in the world.
